Belgium-based Devan Chemicals, founded in 1977, introduced its CBD (cannabidiol) fabrics as part of its microencapsulated active ingredients at Heimtextil 2019 in Frankfurt. CBD was the latest addition to products containing active ingredients such as Q10, aloe vera and vitamin E. Eight months after this introduction, the brand launched its first CBD-infused products.

Founded in 2019, Acabada ProActiveWear is the first brand to launch CBD-infused activewear. Designed in New York and made in Portugal, Acabada blends luxury fabrics with the highest-quality organic CBD to help women wearing its clothes look, feel and perform their best.

How did production begin?

Acabada CEO and co-founder Seth Barum, with more than three decades in textiles, brought together industry specialists after recognizing CBD's positive effects on inflammation and pain. He formed a team of experienced fashion designers, including CCO and co-founder Katrina Petrillo. Together, they worked on an innovative range intended to diversify the textile and CBD markets.

Barum said that in an industry growing through tinctures, oils, creams and edibles, they began designing products approaching consumers' health from a different perspective. Each Acabada ProActiveWear garment contains 25 grams of zero-THC, laboratory-certified, 99.9% pure CBD and retains its effect through 40 high-intensity wash-and-dry cycles. Near the end of those cycles, customers can choose to refresh their CBD-infused garments through Acabada's renewal program, which renews the recyclable synthetic fabrics.

How does CBD clothing affect our bodies?

Hemp-derived CBD with a protective coating is integrated into luxury, high-performance fabrics through microencapsulation. Using Devan's patented textile therapy, the microcapsules attach to the fabric fibers. They are strategically placed to align with muscle groups and gradually open as fabric layers encounter friction against the skin.

CBD is released by contact and absorbed transdermally as each capsule opens. It then interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) to help regulate and reduce inflammation and pain caused by physical activity.

Devan Chemicals conducted extensive research and prepared testing documents to answer questions about CBD clothing. It is now working closely with brands and retailers on more CBD-based products. Developments concern improved recovery, activewear and home textiles such as bed covers, pajamas and pillows.
