Seeing that a product can be made from hemp is interesting. More important is whether it meets a specific need and whether production can continue. CBE JU, which supports European Union work on bio-based industries, explained how SSUCHY project results are being used in industry in an assessment published on October 6, 2026. CBE JU's SSUCHY assessment
A composite combines different materials to bring particular properties together. Here, plant fibers and bio-based binders are used to achieve the performance needed in various components. SSUCHY investigated hemp fibers' technical and environmental characteristics for these applications. SSUCHY project description
A lighter scooter chassis
In one example developed with Dutch company NPSP, a bio-based composite replaced the steel chassis, the scooter's supporting frame. According to results reported by CBE JU, the component's weight fell 59% to 13 kilograms. Bio-based content reached 65%, and calculated life-cycle emissions were up to 11% lower than the steel chassis used for comparison. Results of the scooter application
These findings apply to that specific component and comparison. We cannot assume another design would achieve the same percentages. Nevertheless, this is a concrete example of evaluating the material in real use.
Loudspeaker cabinets and future goals
British audio manufacturer Wilson Benesch incorporated loudspeaker cabinets using composites developed in the project into its products. The original SSUCHY project ended in February 2022. The development described in October 2026 therefore concerns continued use of earlier research in products. Project results incorporated into products
The follow-up project, SSUCHY-Next, aims to bring fiber supply and composite production to a scale more suitable for industry during 2024–2028. Its work includes a goal of developing a 12.6-meter bio-based wind turbine blade. This is a target, rather than a completed product result. SSUCHY-Next project goals
KenevirHaber assessment
In our view, discussion of hemp-based materials should pay attention to the path these examples follow. A manufacturer identifies which property of which component it wants to improve, and research proceeds around that need. A lighter body and a loudspeaker cabinet with suitable acoustic properties require different designs and tests.
The use of hemp fiber alone may not be sufficient reason to choose a product. Cost, durability, maintenance and repeatability of production also need assessment. Consistently delivering the same quality is the important stage after a prototype succeeds.
For those considering this field in Turkey, we also think starting with a concrete component offers a clearer objective. Identifying a buyer's needs and developing suitable fiber and production methods could strengthen hemp's place in industry. Orders, tests and regular production will demonstrate progress as much as product photographs do.
