Canadian boutique guitar maker JOI Guitars has introduced a potentially game-changing acoustic guitar made from hempwood. The new instrument marks a major step toward encouraging sustainable wood use in traditional manufacturing.
The world's first acoustic guitar in its category underwent extensive research and development before production. Because thinly cut hemp tends to break apart, the company had to renew manufacturing methods to preserve its integrity and develop new ways to use hempwood in guitars.

Developed by owner Greg Wilson and JOI Guitars luthier Reuben Forsland, the instrument uses carbon fiber and Kevlar to support the final material. New bending and sanding techniques were also developed to strengthen its overall structure.
In a statement on JOI Guitars' online store, Greg Wilson said, “This guitar blends an age-old farming tradition with acoustic guitar craftsmanship to create the world's first traditionally built hemp guitar. I feel this work will speak to the world's heart through innovators, whether farmers, musicians, manufacturers or craftspeople. Our intention was never simply to create another timber product. It was to benefit humanity by providing a viable wood alternative that helps the environment.”
