According to Hemp Today, the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) urged the EU to change Common Agricultural Policy provisions affecting food rules.
The EU argued CBD should be treated as a “novel food,” requiring additional scientific review before use in commercial foods and dietary supplements.
EIHA disagreed. Because CBD is a molecule present in hemp, which has been consumed for centuries, it considered the novel food classification incorrect.
To support its position, EIHA sought historical visual evidence from businesses.
The group also wanted the EU's 0.2% THC limit raised to 0.3%, as in Asian and American countries, allowing European producers to realize the CBD market's full potential like their American counterparts.
