Charles R. Broderick made a substantial donation to encourage cannabis research.
Broderick, described in the article as a graduate of Harvard and MIT, contributed to research at both institutions.
An announcement released on Tuesday said he had donated $9 million, split equally between the two institutions, to support investigations into how cannabis affects brain function.
The gift was described as the largest donation made to support independent research on cannabinoids.
Broderick said he wanted his contribution to help close the gaps in cannabis research.
A pioneering investor in the cannabis industry, Broderick founded Uji Capital, which described itself as a family office seeking promising opportunities in global capital markets.
Harvard's $4.5 million share would support research on the effects of cannabinoids on brain function. The work would be led by professors Bruce Bean and Wade Regehr in Harvard's Department of Neurobiology.
Regehr said that Bob's support had given the researchers an opportunity to investigate how cannabinoids affect brain function.
