The Consumer Brands Association (CBA), whose members include Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Kellogg, is pressing the US government to continue CBD regulation and expand the laws.
In a July 22 letter, the coalition said existing US CBD policies were not working because CBD-containing foods are not explicitly permitted nationwide.
Betsy Booren, senior vice president of technical affairs, said, “Thoughtfully designed, clearly stated laws are essential to assuring products are safe regardless of the state of purchase and giving consumers the information they need to make informed choices.”
The group also said varying state CBD laws created confusion for producers and consumers.
It told acting FDA commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock that 26% of Americans had tried CBD despite federal law restricting it to pharmaceutical channels.
The US Senate has not yet approved a bill permitting CBD foods. Legal gaps allow small businesses or unscrupulous sellers to market these products while major brands cannot produce them.
“We are all a little tired and frustrated,” CBA senior vice president of government affairs Jen Daulby told Cannabis Wire, which first reported the FDA letter.
