In the weeks preceding publication, US Representatives Kathleen Rice, Morgan Griffith, Angie Craig and Dan Crenshaw introduced the CBD Product Safety and Standardization Act in the House to establish federal standards for CBD-infused foods and beverages.
Rice said CBD products were growing in popularity, but absent federal regulation put consumers at risk and left businesses seeking clarity. The bipartisan legislation would create a clear regulatory framework, provide manufacturing stability and keep unsafe products off shelves.
The bill also had support from the Consumer Brands Association and U.S. Hemp Roundtable. Jonathan Miller of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, a coalition of companies and organizations committed to safe hemp and CBD products, strongly supported requiring the FDA to regulate hemp extracts such as CBD as food and beverage ingredients.
Many Americans remained unaware that no FDA framework was in force for CBD. The agency had said more data were needed. In its Cannabis Derived Products Data Acceleration Plan, published the previous October, it noted growing markets for CBD and other cannabinoids.
