CBD could play an effective role in treating fractures, but a group of Kentucky researchers says more research is needed on cannabinoids in orthopedic surgery.

They identified faster fracture repair and reduced opioid use among the potential benefits.

Earlier research examined

CBD's effectiveness for fractures was investigated in 2017 by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Bone Laboratory. Giving CBD to mice with femoral fractures, the study showed improved biomechanical properties in the repaired bones after eight weeks.

The Kentucky team said: “We now hope the legal obstacles and prejudices surrounding these compounds will disappear so we can do more research.”

Researchers added: “Although precise predictions are impossible, recognizing cannabinoids as legitimate pain relief could change future orthopedic surgeons' prescribing patterns and alleviate the current opioid crisis.”
