Companies racing to develop cannabis-based health products say CBD and other plant-derived compounds are more effective than ordinary products at preventing problems such as plaque and gingivitis.
According to findings from a recent Belgian study, CBD mouthwash is effective against certain plaque-related oral bacteria, like chlorhexidine, an active ingredient in many prescription rinses. It also killed bacteria more effectively than two popular over-the-counter products. These results suggest strong potential for cannabinoids such as CBD and CBG in developing effective, safer oral care products.
Although most studies found chlorhexidine rinses most effective, their side effects, including tooth staining and disruption of beneficial bacteria, carry health concerns. The article presents CBD rinses as a safer alternative because they contain neither alcohol nor fluoride.
In summary, two CBD-infused rinses inhibited bacterial growth to the same extent as chlorhexidine, while the two over-the-counter brands had little or no discernible effect.
As companies seek new products for CBD-curious customers, it would be no surprise to see more cannabinoid-based products reach consumers in the coming period.
